ZMIJANJE.design is an interdisciplinary research and creative endeavour that is deeply committed to the preservation, documentation, and contemporary reinterpretation of Zmijanje embroidery, a craft that was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014. This craft holds a significant aspect of the identity of the tribe inhabiting the Zmijanje area for centuries, and the project aims to ensure its continued legacy.
Initially conceived as a one-year project in 2017, ZMIJANJE.design has naturally evolved over time into a long-term platform and brand, gradually expanding its scope and influence. The project now serves as a space that integrates rich traditional values with contemporary design methodologies and innovative cultural production, blending old and new techniques to create a dynamic, living heritage.
Zmijanje embroidery, as a unique form of visual expression, reflects not only aesthetic values but also complex symbolic, sociocultural, and ontological dimensions of identity. Through a detailed analysis of its structures, compositions and meaning, ZMIJANJE.design seeks to reaffirm its value in a contemporary context, creating a bridge between heritage and innovation.
Focused on preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Zmijanje:
- We collect, digitalize and safeguard the patterns and motifs of traditional embroidery and ornaments to maintain their authenticity and allow for further study.
- We collaborate with universities, museums, institutions, organizations, artists, artisans, designers, and researchers to enable a better understanding and preservation of this cultural heritage.
- We aim to design clothing, accessories, and textile products that incorporate these traditional motifs within a contemporary context.
- We seek to connect artisans with modern industries to enable sustainable production of handcrafted products.
- We organise educational workshops and cultural events to raise awareness about the importance of Zmijanje Embroidery.
